Noir

Before learning about this critical aspect of production throughout history, I had no concept of what noir was. That being said, most movies to this day have a lot of aspects of noir in them. For example, there are many cases of fem fatale in modern action movies as well as the "detective" figure who falls in love. I find this to be very interesting because you can see this concept outside of movies in videos, games, books, etc... Furthermore, it is fascinating how much a black and white movie can draw you in; it allows me to play closer attention to the plot and discover details that I would not consider in color.
In our noir project, we used a couple critical themes. Our fem fatale figure was a "widow" (Karli) and we have the classic detective who is trying to solve the mystery of the murder. That being said, we brought in some modern aspects as well with a storyline based on a friend group.

  1. As you said, the idea of the femme fatale is still prevalent in many modern movies, and this practice dates all the way back to the noir films. However, I also find it interesting to see how this dynamic is changing in the modern world. Many new movies are changing this idea of females only playing these femme fatale roles and they are instead in many leading roles. I also agree with you that black and white movies have a certain draw to them that creates the perfect aesthetic for these mystery driven films. Color movies would not be able to provide for the same feel as black and white movies. I really like your choices for involving the noir style into your film, and as always keep up the great work.

  2. Hey Greg,
I like your thoughts about film noir tropes connection to our modern day society. To me, I found it very interesting that elements of the fem fatale being found in our current literature, movies, and games. Provide an interesting thought that majority of today's entertainment comes from early themes of noir movies. In addition, I totally agree that black and white movies do have this sense of interest that differs from regular colored movies such as mystery and drama.

  3. I didn't really think about how black and white forces the viewer to recognize smaller details, but now that you mention it, I've definitely experienced the same thing. Without having colors to catch my eye, the lighting really plays a huge part in what we are meant to see and what we're not.
